Tech Talk - Digital TV Transition By Joshua Nelson
You have probably seen advertisements on TV or news articles talking about “Digital Television” or the “end of analog broadcasts”. In summary, by February 17, 2009, television stations broadcasting over-the-air will stop sending out their current “analog” signals and will then only broadcast a digital signal. If you already have a TV capable of receiving digital signals or if you have cable or satellite TV, for the most part, you don't need to worry about this transition. However, if you have older TVs (generally more than 3 – 4 years old), you will need to get a converter box to receive over-the-air TV signals.
The good news is that the government is issuing up to two $40 vouchers to use in buying up to two converter boxes per household. You simply need to go to http://www.dtv2009.org or call 1-888-DTV-2009 to get your coupons. Even if you have cable or satellite, I would recommend getting the vouchers. I used my voucher to get a converter box in case my satellite signal goes out due to equipment failure or bad weather. I just installed the box today and was impressed by the picture quality and availability of “extra” channels
