A Message from Pastor James
May 7, 2010
So, the mail came. There was a card from my mother. I opened it in front of Susan. It said, “Jimmy, Happy Mother’s Day.”
Susan said, “your Mother sent YOU a Mother’s Day card?”
“Yes,” I said. “Isn’t that nice?”
“Well, isn’t that backwards? Aren’t you supposed to send a card to HER?”
“Oh, I always get her a Mother’s Day card. Although, there were some years when I got the card off in the mail so late, she didn’t actually get it ‘til after Mother’s Day. But I always call. I’ve never missed.”
“But, don’t you think it’s rather odd for you to get a Mother’s Day card from your own Mother?”
“Oh, I get one every year,” I said in response.
In wonderment she asked, “Every year?”
“Yes, every year!”
She asked, “how long has this been going on?”
I thought for a moment then replied, “I guess it’s been over three decades now!”
“Three decades???”
“Yes,” I said, “one time when I was in my 30’s I asked her about it.”
“What did she say?”
“Well,” I offered, “she said something to the effect that now that I was a father, I must know what it feels like to love a child with all your heart and soul. And, well, that was how she loved me.” Then I remember her saying, ‘because I am so proud to be your mother, I want to honor you by sending you a Mother’s Day card’.”
Susan reflected on this last part for a moment then said, “That’s beautiful!”
“Well, I think so too!” I said. “Besides, I’m now in the Guinness Book of World Records. You see, so far, I’m the only son in the history of Sondom who has received a Mother’s Day card from his own mother for over three consecutive decades. I hold the record!”
Susan smiled and said, “Wow. That’s a lot of love.”
LADIES! Tomorrow, Saturday May 8! 10:30 AM. Gather & Grow SPRING BRUNCH.
Starting Monday at 9 AM, you may begin bringing donations for the YARD SALE to the church. Take your items to the Fellowship Hall. No one will be at the church after 3 PM. If you have to come in the evening or at an odd time, call me at 248-722-4516, and I will arrange for someone to meet you at the church.
ALSO, I am deputizing the entire congregation as a posse to go out and round up customers for our Yard Sale. Here’s what to do.
1. Let all your Facebook friends know about the Yard Sale, May 20-22, 9-5. It will take you less than 20 seconds to send a message to ALL your Facebook friends. In fact, do it now and do it again a couple days before the sale. Facebooking is now the most effective way to get a message out. So, please take the time to spread the word on Facebook.
2. When you are at church the next two Sundays, pick up some flyers that advertise the sale. Then, when you go to a store, hang the flyer up on their bulletin board or ask if you can tape it on a wall or window.
3. Keep some flyers with you and when you see your friends or neighbors, just hand them one. Tell them you want to make sure they know about it.
We’ve got to get the word out. So, you’ve been deputized to round up customers by spreading the word. YARD SALE, May 20-22, 9-5.
ALSO, we still need sales people for the actual sale. If you can work a shift at sales on those days, contact Susan Barlow at 248-534-3799 or Rachel Sparling at 248-623-6250.
This Sunday, May 9, is MOTHER / MENTOR DAY. You will have an opportunity to share briefly how your mother or a female mentor helped you to grow spiritually. Also, we will hear presentations on the same subject from Becca Nugent, Gene Lewis, and Jan Rowe. It is going to be a wonderful service. The choir has a special piece prepared. Janet Mutz, daughter of Andy & Martha Pepper, will accompany the choir on the flute. In addition to all this, Bob Caldrone & Mary Garrone are going to sing a duet. Come and worship God Sunday. Be with your Bethany family on this special day.
Sunday, 9:15 AM. Sunday School for all ages. Adults have two options. First, James & Samantha Bolin will be guest leaders during “The Wisdom of Star Trek” class in the Parlor. They will show clips from the original series episode “The Trouble with Tribbles.” It will be great fun to watch and discuss this famous show. ALSO, Michelle McGregor will be leading a “Parenting Teens” class in the Fellowship Hall.
Valet service begins at 10 AM – pull up under the portico and honk your horn.
Paul wrote these words: “Live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” – Philippians 1:27a
BE A BLESSING TO SOMEONE TODAY! GIVE A COMPLIMENT OR A HUG! HAVE A BLESSED DAY!
